The International Electric Vehicle Expo (May 3rd ~ May 6th), which celebrated its ninth event this year, was held in an atmosphere where the atmosphere of the event had been restored since the Corona 19, and it was held with many officials and visitors visiting.

While major electric vehicle manufacturers such as Polestar and Tesla appeared and held a test drive event, a special experience was opened at the electric vehicle-related technology exhibition hall, attracting the attention of visitors. Various technologies including autonomous driving technology and electric vehicle charging technology were confirmed.

What caught my attention the most was a test drive program that allowed you to drive around Seogwipo with an electric car, and a remote driving experience where you could actually drive a vehicle in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do from Jeju. What did the first auto show look like after 'With Corona'?

In the exhibition hall inside the Jeju International Convention Center, where the Expo was held, various automobile-related companies visited and promoted their technologies. Companies exhibiting battery-related technologies and charging-related technologies stood out, and public corporations such as Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and public institutions such as local governments participated in the exhibition.

The place where most visitors gathered was the booth of Autonomous a2z. a2z, a company specializing in autonomous driving technology, introduced remote control driving technology to the public for the first time through this fair. With the help of on-site officials, I was able to sit on a remote-controlled driving device that looked like a racing game device.

When sitting on the device, the steering wheel and pedals similar to a car are placed, and the image of the road is floating on the front screen. An official pointed out, "This screen is taken from a vehicle that is currently in the autonomous vehicle test city located in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do." Come to think of it, another screen outside the device shows the driver's seat of the vehicle linked to the device.

Put your hand on the handle of the device and turn left and right, and then the handle of the other screen moves. When I step on the accelerator carefully, the car starts slowly. For safety, the top speed was limited to 20 km/h, but it was quite strange that a vehicle moving in Seogwipo, Jeju, was moving a vehicle in Gyeonggi-do far away.

There is not much difference from the actual driving sensation. As soon as you turn the steering wheel when you meet a gentle curve, the vehicle moves left and right, and depending on how hard you press the brake, the vehicle stops strongly or slows down. While driving around the test city, I couldn't feel much difference from the actual driving.

The only flaw is the delay. Unlike actual driving, where the direction changes immediately when the steering wheel is turned, it is inevitable that a slight delay is felt in the steering wheel or brake when the vehicle and device are connected via the Internet. As a result, an official said that the goal is to drive more professional people who are more suited to remote driving than ordinary people.

In addition, as the government included remote control for autonomous vehicles in the permit regulations, a field official explained that remote control technology for autonomous vehicles is necessary. Of course, it will be difficult to meet the technology right away as it is necessary to reinforce the technology for safety, but it was a valuable opportunity to feel as if a new traffic change seen in the movie was approaching.

It's a pity that Hyundai and Kia are not attending.

Several events were held outside the exhibition hall. Companies that manufacture and sell ultra-compact electric vehicles, as well as foreign electric vehicle-related companies such as Volvo-affiliated electric vehicle brands Polestar and Tesla, often visited and took a seat in the exhibition hall.

Polestar, who is not yet familiar with Korea, introduced Polestar 2, a medium-sized electric vehicle. The opportunity to drive a new electric vehicle was also provided during a test drive event around the fairgrounds. Visitors to the site often showed interest by looking around the inside of the vehicle, starting the engine and going around the Jungmun Tourist Complex.

A notable event is the 'International University Student EV Autonomous Driving Contest', in which university students directly drive their own self-driving vehicles. This event, in which the model vehicles made by college students are autonomously driven on a small track, was also an event that visitors stopped by and watched with interest.

One regrettable point is that Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors, which rank high in domestic electric vehicle sales, did not participate. In particular, it was a disappointment because it contrasted with the progress of the test-drive event of the Ioniq 5, which was just released at last year's expo.

"We will actively utilize the characteristics of Jeju Island"

One thing that stood out in this exhibition was the audience. This year's Jeju International Electric Vehicle Expo had many general visitors, including industry officials, but there were many cases where tourists came to know about the expo after stopping by the Jungmun Tourism Complex. Tourists participated in test-drive events and actively participated in events in the fairgrounds.

The Tesla test drive site was set up at the Teddy Bear Museum, and it was said that reservations for test drive were already closed before the opening of the expo. A representative of the Expo Organizing Committee laughed, saying, "There were many people from related industries and academia, especially this year, there were a lot of general visitors."

Regarding the reason why the general audience visited the expo more than in previous years, the official said, "I think the relaxation of the distance is not an interlocking effect. You were able to stop by the course,” he explained, explaining why.

In addition, the official said, "It is necessary to move away from the simple exhibition and actively utilize the special features of Jeju Island, and I think we made the first attempt this year." He also said, "I'm glad that the attempt to create a 'visiting exhibition hall' was successful, just like Tesla tried this time."
