Kakao
Mobility (CEO Ryu Geung-sun) and Autonomous a2z (CEO Han Ji-hyung), a company
that develops autonomous driving solutions, will launch a paid autonomous
driving service on real roads near the government complex in Sejong from the
18th.
It is the first case in
Korea to introduce a platform-based, demand-responsive, paid autonomous driving
service in the form of a commercial service.
Sejong Special
Self-Governing City Mayor Lee Chun-hee, National Assembly Mobility Forum
Research Representative Hong Seong-guk, and Transportation Logistics Office
Director Baek Seung-geun of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
also attended the service launch event held on the 18th and had an opportunity
to experience the entire service process.
This is a
demand-response autonomous driving service that allows passengers to directly
call (or reserve) an autonomous vehicle through the platform when needed.
The first service will
start for ‘Early Riders’ selected by Sejong City at three boarding and
disembarking points in a section of about 4 km near the Government Complex
Sejong, and will gradually expand the service area and target audience. The
vehicle can accommodate up to two people, and a safety driver with expertise in
autonomous driving systems rides with them for safety.
For this service, Kakao
Mobility collaborated with Autonomous a2z, a startup that develops autonomous
driving solutions. Autonomous a2z is evaluated as a company with the highest
level of technological prowess in Korea in the field of vehicle solutions for
autonomous driving such as recognition, judgment, and control. and test
technology.
Autonomous a2z provides
a vehicle solution for autonomous driving, and Kakao Mobility provides a
service platform.
As for the paid
autonomous driving service, in May of this year, with the enforcement of the
'Autonomous Driving Vehicle Act', paid passenger transportation through
autonomous vehicles is allowed, and in November, the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure and Transport established an 'autonomous driving vehicle trial
operation zone' where the autonomous driving paid service can be demonstrated.
Release is possible as specified.
Based on the platform
technology and service operation capabilities accumulated through Kakao T, Kakao
Mobility plans to strengthen collaboration so that more companies,
institutions, and academia can participate in the development of autonomous
driving services. In the first half of next year, Kakao Mobility plans to
introduce a paid autonomous driving service with self-driving vehicles.
Jang Seongwook,
managing director of Kakao Mobility Future Business Office, said, “Starting
with this service, we plan to refine the platform technology necessary for
autonomous driving as well as service elements suitable for the domestic
market. We will also establish an omni-directional cooperation system to
accelerate the commercialization of autonomous driving services.”
Han Ji-hyeong, CEO of Autonomous a2z, said, “Based on the acquisition of the first paid self-driving passenger transportation service provider, we will continue to update solutions and gradually expand the demand-responsive autonomous driving service area. We plan to provide various autonomous driving services that apply a2z solutions nationwide.”
